For the locale variants, use the country codes (ISO 3166) found in http://www.iso.org/iso/list-en1-semic-2.txt. I.e.:
fr-FR = French from France
fr-CA = French from Canada
zh-CH = Simplified Chinese (China)
zh-TW = Traditional Chinese (Taiwan)
es-MX = Spanish from Mexico
pt-PT = Portuguese from Portugal
pt-BR = Portuguese from Brazil
Note that there are some tool-specific language codes as the ones used in Trados, Logoport, etc. I.e:
es-EM = International, neutral, Spanish (for Trados)
es-XN = International, neutral, Spanish (for Logoport)
es-XL = Latin American Spanish (for Logoport)
